Jun 26, 2008 · I learned "sometimes y and w" in Iowa in the 1950s and 60s. And since "w" is two "U"s, I have often wondered why we don't spell the word "vacuum" as "vacwm". Then it would be clear that "w" can be a vowel. But other than words from Welsh, I've never seen a "w" vowel. Unless, of course, it is a vowel in the word "vowel."
